Dr Ronald Chin’s Guide On Acoustic Neuroma
Acoustic Neuroma is a non-cancerous inner ear tumor. This essentially affects your hearing and balance. It constitutes the bulk of cerebellopontine angle tumors. And the majority of the tumors are unilateral.
Its symptoms include unilateral sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus, disequilibrium, vertigo, and facial hypoesthesia. An extension to the brainstem can result in hydrocephalus and even death.
Investigation for this disease is done using Weber and Rinne tests, CT scans, MRI, and audiometry.
Treatment for elderly patients with small tumors only requires observation and regular follow-ups. However, large tumors in younger patients require radiotherapy or surgery.
