Dr Ronald Chin’s Guide On Rhinitis

Rhinitis is the inflammation of the nasal cavity mucosa. It can be classified into two types.

●     Nonallergic rhinitis

●     Allergic rhinitis

Nonallergic rhinitis usually presents with a clear rhinorrhoea and nasal obstruction. It’s uncommon to present with watery or itchy eyes or sneezing. It can be both seasonal and perennial. Some nonallergic rhinitis includes viral, bacterial, occupational, hypothyroidism, vasomotor rhinitis, rhinitis of pregnancy, rhinitis medicamenotosa, granulomatous rhinitis, gustatory rhinitis, and atrophic rhinitis.

It can be treated in both nonsurgical and surgical ways. Nonsurgical measures include saline irrigation, adrenergic agents, irritant avoidance, and anticholinergic agents.

Surgical measures include turbinate surgery and septoplasty.

Allergic rhinitis is the inflammation of the nasal mucosa caused by an IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reaction to foreign allergies. It can be classified as both seasonal and perennial. This is most likely during adolescence, but you can get this at any age.
