Dr Ronald Chin’s Look At Noise-Induced Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Noise-induced sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL) can be caused by excessive exposure to loud noises. This can be classified into 2 categories: acute noise-induced hearing loss and chronic noise-induced hearing loss.

Acute noise-induced hearing loss is caused by exposure to high noise levels for short periods ranging from seconds to hours. This is often reversible.

Chronic noise-induced hearing loss is caused by long-term exposure to loud noises. It’s mostly irreversible. In acute hearing loss, you experience a sudden bilateral hearing loss and tinnitus. In chronic hearing loss, the loss is gradual.

An audiogram is used to diagnose this disease. Treatment for this is hearing aids and you can wear ear plugs or muffs as protection.
