Dr Ronald Chin’s Look At Tracheostomy

Tracheostomy is the temporary opening from the trachea to the lower neck. It’s usually formed to bypass airway obstruction in the larynx or upper airway.

Tracheostomy tubes come in various sizes and forms such as cuffed tracheostomy tubes, uncuffed tracheostomy, and fenestrated tracheostomy.

A cuffed tracheostomy tube protects the lungs from secretions and blood passing down the trachea. An uncuffed tracheostomy tube helps keep breathing passage open and allows some air to vocal cords for voice production. The fenestrated tubes enable air to pass through the larynx and allow voice production.
